“Pablo Puentes Borges, a mercenary from the Republic of Colombia, was taken into custody at the request of the Russian Investigative Committee,” the spokeswoman for the organization told the press.
During the course of the investigation it was established that he took part in hostilities in the ranks of the Ukrainian armed formations in exchange for a material reward, the official explained.
“Equipped with automatic firearms and explosive devices, Borges illegally crossed the state border of the Russian Federation in December 2024 and invaded the territory of the Kursk region,” Petrenko argued.
In this regard, she added that the detainee committed crimes against civilians with the aim of intimidating the population, causing serious damage to private property and destabilizing the activities of local authorities.
According to the representative of the Investigative Committee, the mercenary was captured during fighting against the Russian Army near the settlement of Aleksandria, in the Sudzha district of the border province of Kursk.
Previously, the investigative body reported the inclusion in the international wanted list of more than 580 foreign mercenaries in the service of the kyiv Army.
“A total of 845 people from 55 countries are involved in criminal cases, so far 589 mercenaries have been declared wanted internationally. 86 cases have already been investigated and 49 sentences handed down,” said the statement published by the Committee on January 17.
The Russian institution specified that another 31 citizens from 14 nations, including the United States, Germany, Sweden, Ireland, Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, Argentina, among others, were included in criminal proceedings for mercenarism.
