South African president defends troop stay in DRC

Pretoria, Jan 29 (Prensa Latina) South African President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted the values of the country's military mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In a statement, the president explained how the presence of uniformed South Africans in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo does not constitute a declaration of war against any country or state.

The members of the South African National Defence Force (Sandf) in the DRC, he recalled, are part of the efforts of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the United Nations to achieve peace and protect thousands of lives that are constantly threatened by the conflict in that nation.

The presence of the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC) forces demonstrates the commitment of SADC member states to support the Democratic Republic of the Congo in its efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability and ultimately create an enabling environment for sustainable development and prosperity, the South African President stressed.

In that regard, he added, South Africa welcomes the position recently adopted by the United Nations Security Council during its special session on the situation in the DRC, which calls for an immediate end to hostilities, the reversal of the territorial expansion of M23, the withdrawal of external forces from that country and the resumption of peace talks under the Nairobi Process.
