Guatemala to add 150,000 people literate by 2025

Guatemala City, Feb 18 (Prensa Latina) Faced with the challenge of 1,907,401 persons who do not know how to read or write, Guatemala plans to train 150,000 through the National Literacy Committee (Conalfa) during 2025.

Last year we covered 67% of the figure and in the current annual period we will maintain it, the coordinator of the Monitoring and Evaluation Unit of this entity, Juan Carlos Callejas, quoted by the local newspaper Prensa Libre.

To achieve it, we are projecting the participation of 12,500 literacy teachers, in a process that will begin next March after a preparation, the expert explained and referred to the difficulty of the task due to several factors.

He pointed out the stages of poverty, social exclusion, lack of basic services and scarce presence of the State in the communities where people do not know how to read nor write.

“They are interested in learning, but their economic situation limits them from attending literacy groups because their priority is to work in their crops or to migrate to obtain income to feed their families,” he said.

He exemplified that in the department of Alta Verapaz, poverty levels are high, people move to harvest coffee or cut sugar cane so there is less coverage of education and health services.

Likewise, Callejas added, access to electricity is limited and communities are more vulnerable to disasters and natural phenomena.
