Calm returns to Syrian city after day of clashes

Damascus, Mar 2 (Prensa Latina) The city of Jaramana, located two kilometers east of Damascus, the capital, was calm today after clashes between the 'Jaramana Shield' militia and the General Security Forces of the new Syrian government.

According to local authorities, the clashes, which began last Friday killed one security personnel and wounded two, as well as paralyzed public and private activities, and generated an atmosphere of tension in this city, inhabited mainly by Druze monotheists, in addition to Christians and Muslims from different communities.

The agreement reached stipulates the deployment of Damascus forces at the entrances and exits of the city and at key points inside the city, as well as the surrender of the armed men accused of murdering the security officer.

Jaramana notables and dignitaries issued a statement calling for unity and preserving order, and to prosecute all those involved in the shooting incident.

After reporting these acts of violence, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed the army to protect the Druze community residing in Jaramana.

“We will not allow the Islamist and extremist regime in Syria to harm the Druze, and we will attack it if it attacks the Druze in Jaramana,” the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office reported in a statement broadcast by Israel Radio.

The Israeli occupation authorities recently issued interfering statements threatening to intervene militarily under pretext of protecting the Druze in Syria.
