Colombian President calls for a united South America

Bogotá, 2 Mar (Prensa Latina) The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, today insisted on the need for South America to unite around issues of common interest for the region's development.

In a message posted on X the President said that he would propose to whoever wins the presidential mandate in Ecuador to reopen the headquarters of the Union of South American Nations and make it operational, in order to rebuild the best options for integration in the South American region.

“The unity around the great projects of the revitalisation of the Amazon, clean energy and its electrical conduction, and the common effort in technological development and the common use of digitalised knowledge,” wrote the head of state in his proposal.

Petro also published a photo taken during a meeting with his counterparts from Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva; Chile, Gabriel Boric, and the President of Uruguay, Yamandú Orsi.

The meeting to which he alluded took place during a dinner hosted by President Lula at his country’s embassy in Montevideo last Friday, as part of the Heads of State’s attendance at Orsi’s inauguration ceremony the previous day.

Also in Montevideo, the Colombian President met with his counterparts from Bolivia, Luis Arce, and Honduras, Xiomara Castro, with whom he discussed migration, trade and integration.
