The initiative now responds to a request to the Legislative Assembly by the country’s vice president, Stephan Brunner, to process the energy transition of fuels presented more than a year ago.
The rescue of the so-called project 24.079 will replace in a first stage the use of diesel in the heavy transport sector with biomethane, a gas produced from the decomposition of agricultural, livestock and industrial organic waste, according to a statement from the governor’s office.
The strategy, which includes the gradual displacement of diesel in different stages and different industries, has 310 000 dollars from the Joint Fund of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Industrial Development Program, both of the United Nations Organization.
Vice President Brunner said that “the introduction of biomethane will boost international de-carbonization goals by reducing dependence on non-renewable energies and, substantially, greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural sector.”
The ruler expressed his appreciation for the collaboration of both UN agencies and reiterated “the need to speed up the project that emerged a little over a year ago to allow the Costa Rican Oil Refinery to advance in sustainable energies.”
