Mexican Authorities Report 362 Measles Cases

Mexico City, April 15 (Prensa Latina) Mexico has recorded a total of 362 measles cases to date, most of them in the northern state of Chihuahua, bordering the United States, and one death, Health Secretary David Kershenobich reported.

Speaking at President Claudia Sheinbaum’s regular meeting with journalists, the minister specified that in addition to the 347 cases detected in Chihuahua so far this year, cases have also been reported in the states of Campeche, Oaxaca, Sinaloa, Sonora, Querétaro, and Zacatecas.

According to the official, in all of these states, authorities contained the cases around the areas where they have been diagnosed, but at the same time, they actively implemented the prevention program, administering 715,277 vaccinations from January to March.

Kershenobich mentioned there have been five hospitalizations and one death, although the latter involved a patient who not only suffered from measles but also had kidney and organ damage and comorbidities such as diabetes.

The Secretary of Health showed a graph showing the downward trend in cases, but insisted on the importance of citizens getting vaccinated. “We recommend again the vaccination schedule, which must cover children from one to nine years old, as well as adolescents and adults between 10 and 39 years old, and all health personnel between 20 and 39 years old who have been in contact with positive cases,” he noted.

He recalled the National Vaccination Week from April 26 to May 3.
