Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technologies are transforming safety and health at work, and now advanced robotics allow workers to move away from hazardous tasks and environments.
Robots lift heavy loads, handle toxic materials, and work in extreme temperatures. They take on repetitive and monotonous tasks, while digital devices and sensors can detect hazards at an early stage.
At the same time, if no adequate occupational health and safety measures, digital technologies can lead to accidents, ergonomic hazards, intensified workload, reduced job control, and blurred boundaries.
With the slogan “Revolutionizing health and safety: the role of AI and digitalization at work,” the United Nations campaign to mark the date sheds light on how new technologies are changing occupational safety and health, including through task automation, the use of smart tools and monitoring systems, extended reality and virtual reality, and algorithmic work management.
