As in the case of the institutions in the center of Port-au-Prince, those located in Turgeau and Canapé-Vert must be relocated before it is too late,’ stresses a letter from the health authority.
In the letter to the Minister of Public Health and Population, Bertrand Sinal, and to the Director of the National Blood Transfusion Center, Ernst Noel, the organization requested the decentralization of blood transfusion services.
Konbit San Pou San, a leading organization in the mobilization for voluntary blood donation, explained that the Turgeau facility, now landlocked, is very unsafe, and access for donors and patients’ families is very difficult.
According to the newspaper Le Nouvelliste, Konbit San Pou San asked for the temporary transfer of some of the staff and equipment to a safer area.
It also asked for the rapid reopening of two or three regional centers to guarantee the processing and distribution of blood outside Port-au-Prince.
The organization points out that it is vital to materialize the evacuation of these centers considering that the country needs more than 80,000 blood bags annually, and the collection does not exceed 20,000.
