A member of the ruling Workers’ Party, Quaquá confirmed the agreement in a social media post, stating that the invitation was extended by Havana Governor Yanet Hernández. The two officials met at an official dinner hosted at the Casa de la Amistad, Havana’s government headquarters.
During the meeting, Quaquá invited Hernández to attend the BRICS+ Mayors and Municipalities General Assembly, scheduled for May 26–28 in Maricá.
“We signed the sister-city agreement and I invited her to join us in Brazil for the BRICS+ Assembly,” Quaquá stated in his post. The ceremony included an exchange of symbolic gifts, a customary gesture in such diplomatic engagements.
According to Brasil 247, the pact aligns with Maricá’s efforts to strengthen international ties, particularly with Global South nations and BRICS members.
The report notes that Rio de Janeiro has actively pursued similar agreements, fostering collaboration with cities across emerging economies.
