This is the first visit of the Syrian transitional leader to Europe since he assumed power last December, after the overthrow of Bashar Al-Assad’s government.
This visit is the continuation of France’s historical commitment to the Syrians who aspire to peace and democracy, said the Elysée.
Early in February, Macron had invited Al-Sharaa, but then made this invitation conditional on the formation of a government that would include all components of civil society and provide guarantees on security.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot had visited Syria in early January, where he met with the local leader and reopened his country’s embassy in Damascus.
Barrot justified the communication with the new transitional authorities in that Arab country by saying that not to hold talks with them would be irresponsible towards the French and would be to roll out a red carpet to the Islamic State.
Macron will repeat to Al-Sharaa the previous demands to his front, the stabilization of the region and the fight against terrorism, noted the Elysée.
