The two leaders held a telephone conversation about the conflict in the Strip and regional tensions, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency.
According to the statement, El-Sisi detailed Cairo’s mediation efforts, including attempts to secure a new truce, facilitate the prisoner exchange, and provide more aid to the territory.
The president emphasized that the creation of a Palestinian state, based on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, is the only path to sustainable peace in the region.
In turn, Macron reiterated France’s support for Egypt’s role in efforts to find a solution to the crisis and praised Cairo’s humanitarian initiatives, including the treatment of wounded Palestinians. He also referred to his visit to Egypt last April, during which he toured the town of Al-Arish ( about 50 kilometers from the Rafah border crossing), and a hospital treating injured and sick Palestinians.
An international conference, organized by France and Saudi Arabia, will be held in New York later this month to address the Palestinian issue.
