Cubans honor Che in province that holds his remains

Santa Clara, Cuba, Jun 14 (Prensa Latina) A representation of the people of the central Cuban province of Villa Clara paid tribute on Saturday to Ernesto Che Guevara, on his 97th birthday, at the memorial that holds his remains.

The day started with a parade of hundreds of workers and students through several points of the city, protagonist in 1958 of the Battle of Santa Clara, a key event for the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, and left Che forever linked to this city.

Later, the Sculpture Complex, which houses the remains of the Argentine-Cuban guerrilla fighter since 1997, was the venue where 130 fourth-grade pioneers changed their scarves, representing all those in the province who are now members of the “Jose Marti” Pioneers Organization (OPJM).

The leading political and government authorities in the central province awarded the “June 14” distinction and the Young Communist Youth Union (UJC)’s card to outstanding students and workers.

This June 14, Cubans also remember the 180th birthday of Antonio Maceo, one of the leading leaders of the Mambi struggles for the country’s independence, and protagonist of the Invasion of the West, one of the most important military campaigns in America in the 19th century.
