The compromise came during a meeting between the Canadian prime minister and the U.S. president on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) Summit, which is being held in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada.
Carney and Trump discussed “immediate trade pressures and priorities for workers and businesses in each country, and shared updates on key issues raised in negotiations on a new economic and security relationship between Canada and the United States,” the Canadian head of state’s office said.
They also discussed collaboration on other priorities shared at the summit, such as critical minerals, arms and drug smuggling, illegal drugs and border security, as well as defense cooperation.
More talks between Washington and Ottawa are planned for later this week, after the global meeting concludes, according to Dominic LeBlanc, the federal minister responsible for relations between the two countries.
Following the meeting, the White House announced that Trump would leave the G7 meeting early due to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
