Cuba starts celebrations for Historian’s Day

Camaguey, Cuba, June 17 (Prensa Latina) With a tribute to Generalissimo Maximo Gomez Baez, the National Historian's Day begins in Guaimaro, the birthplace of Cuba's first Constitution. It will run until July 31.

The Union of Cuban Historians is organizing the event, which this year pays tribute to Gomez on the anniversary of his death and to Eusebio Leal, Historian of Havana, who died on July 31, 2020.

At Guaimaro Museum, the site where the 1869 Constitution was signed, the activities began with panels, lectures, and exchanges between cultural institutions, historians, and the Association of Cuban Veterants.

The event, which promotes the study of national history, will include recognitions for specialists and associates, highlighting the 2025 Provincial History Award, which will be presented on July 1, Cuban Historian’s Day.

Camaguey, with 10 national awards, will be the center of attention. The local Historian’s Office will receive the Emilio Roig diploma, while researcher Fernando Crespo will receive the Fernando Portuondo del Prado distinction.

The closing ceremony of the event next year, which is dedicated to Fidel Castro’s birthday, will be held in Nuevitas, the founding municipality of Camaguey.

This event also coincides with the 130th anniversary of the resumption of the Wars of Independence and the fall of Jose Marti.

Fernando Manzo, president of the UNHIC in Camaguey, highlighted Maximo Gomez’s ties with Guaimaro and the work of local historians. The province has 242 associates and offices in Heritage and museums.

The Union of Cuban Historians emphasizes on the importance of highlighting the legacy of figures like Gomez and Leal, pillars of Cuban identity.
