Dominican Bar Association demands Congress to approve Penal Code

Santo Domingo, Jun 17 ( Prensa Latina) The Bar Association of the Dominican Republic (Card) demanded the National Congress to immediately approve the Penal Code postponed for 25 years by that instance, and called for a protest today.

The president of Card, Trajano Potentini, called the legal community of the country to meet at 09.30 local time at the Centro de los Héroes, in front of the Legislative, on the occasion of the quarter of a century of the draft of the new Penal Code.

Under the slogan “No more delay, enough of the wait!”, the lawyers’ guild described as unacceptable the indifference of the Congress to give the green light to an essential piece of legislation for the modernization of the Dominican penal system.

Potentini pointed out that it has been 25 years of legislative inertia, of excuses, of institutional indifference.

Meanwhile, the country continues with an archaic Penal Code, unable to respond to the current challenges of criminality, human rights and legal security, he pointed out.

The purpose of the reprobation to the legislative position is to make visible the struggle of the jurists for a fair, modern and coherent penal reform with the reality of the country, reported Al Momento.
