Coinciding with the summit, a meeting of the high-level steering committee for Sustainable Development Goal 4 will take place, which seeks to ensure inclusive, equitable, and quality education by 2030.
According to the global teacher workforce report, 44 million additional teachers will be needed within five years to cover primary and secondary levels.
The shortage is widespread: sub-Saharan Africa needs 15 million additional teachers, while higher-income countries face retention problems.
The summit will analyze the causes of the teacher shortage, as well as ways to retain teachers, improve their qualifications, and strengthen their voice in public policymaking.
In recent years, the primary school dropout rate has nearly doubled, from 4.62 percent in 2015 to 9.06 percent in 2022, with many young people leaving their jobs at the beginning of their careers.
Recent reports cite working conditions, the impact of COVID-19, lack of social recognition, and limited access to training as among the reasons for this vocational crisis.
