French police officers protest working conditions

Paris, Jan 31 (Prensa Latina) More than twenty French cities, including Paris, will be the scene of unusual police protests, called by unions denouncing poor working conditions and a lack of resources. The Alliance organization is one of the main groups calling for officers to take to the streets, after months of demanding that the State address their grievances.

Insufficient or obsolete equipment, workplace stress, and police stations described in the press as “unworthy” are among the complaints.

The media are reporting stories such as that of a station in Perpignan dubbed the “Police Station of Shame,” and of officers working in areas flooded with sewage and infested with rats.

Among the police officers’ demands are increased material resources and infrastructure, and a stronger justice system in the face of crime.

Although this type of mobilization is unusual in France, it is not the first time that uniformed personnel have taken to the streets in an organized fashion to demand better working conditions.
