Cuban Ambassador presents credentials to FAO

Rome, Feb 21 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Ambassador to this nation, Jorge Luis Cepero, presented his credentials to Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), as his country's representative.

Both sides reaffirmed, at the ceremony held at the headquarters of the international organization, their commitment to further strengthening relations for the development of projects in areas of mutual interest, such as climate resilience, food security, and nutrition, a release from the Cuban Embassy stresses.

The diplomat expressed his gratitude for the FAO’s support and contribution to his nation’s agri-food development, including the provision of technical assistance and resources necessary for agricultural promotion, food production, and the consolidation of high-level scientific institutions in the agricultural sector.

The ambassador also acknowledged the important role the FAO plays in supporting the development and implementation of public policies aimed at transforming local agri-food systems, through its participation in the implementation of 13 projects underway in 59 municipalities across the island.

He underscored, during his meeting with the FAO chief, the negative effect of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States for more than six decades on the Cuban people’s right to food. Cepero emphasized that the effects of this criminal action worsened after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 29 threatening to raise tariffs on countries that supply fuel to Cuba, a genocidal measure that severely impacts food sovereignty.

The source added that Cuba’s Deputy Permanent Representative to FAO, Claudia Gonzalez, and Alternate Permanent Representatives, Damian Delgado and Carlos Javier Gutierrez, attended the ceremony.
