Dominican Left calls on march for Sovereignty

Santo Domingo, Feb. 21 (Prensa Latina) Dominican left-wing organizations reaffirmed their call to participate in the national march for sovereignty and the rights of the people, scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday.

In a press release, the Communist Party of Labor, the Dominican Popular Movement (MPD), the Caamanista Movement (MC), the Force of the Revolution (FR), the Homeland for All Party (PPT), and the Dominican Leftist Reference (RID) reiterated that the mobilization will also demand the right to self-determination and the defense of the economic, political, and cultural rights of the Dominican people.

They expressed that the event has been embraced by various groups, coordinating bodies, coalitions, and social movements, and that it will also serve to pay tribute to the heroes of the independence struggle led by the patriot Juan Pablo Duarte.

They remembered that February also marks the 53rd anniversary of the execution of Colonel Francisco Alberto Caamano, leader of the April 1965 Revolution and the heroic Caracoles Beach expedition.

“This march is dedicated to Duarte, Caamaño, and Gregorio Luperon, protesting the growing U.S. military intervention in ports, airports, seas, coasts, and borders, and demanding their withdrawal from the country and the entire Caribbean region,” the six political organizations stated.

The leftist organizations will demand living wages; universal access to health, education, and social security; adequate housing for the people; an end to gender violence and racism; and respect for the rights of young people and children, among other demands.

They also expressed their solidarity with peoples under attack, invasion, and in struggle, including Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Palestine.
