Uruguayan unions concerned about layoffs and job insecurity

Montevideo, Feb 26 (Prensa Latina) The PIT-CNT, Uruguay's unified labor union, expressed its concern regarding announcements of mass layoffs and the increase in precarious employment in Uruguay.

Sergio Sommaruga, Secretary of Communication and Propaganda for the PIT-CNT said that and decried such a situation.

The union leader referred to the recent announcements by the multinational corporations BASF and Sabre regarding massive staff reductions due to restructuring processes in their global operations.

This is compounded by the closure, currently temporary, of the AmBev-Cympay brewery in Paysandu, and the layoffs of approximately 100 workers.

“There are a number of companies that are destroying jobs, closing down, and making layoff decisions,” Sommaruga noted.

He added that at the same time, more companies are opening than closing, but under precarious working conditions.

“We are losing jobs that offer added value through job training, and we are generating low-skilled, low-quality jobs with little safety net,” he pointed out.

He said this deepens what he called the trend of “job insecurity,” which, he said the government must address.

For his part, the leader of the Confederation of Industrial Unions (CSI), Danilo Dardano, said that the union is seeking a meeting with President Yamandu Orsi in light of the company closures and job losses.
