UN agencies condemn attack on school in Iran

United Nations, March 2 (Prensa Latina) United Nations (UN) agencies joined entities worldwide in condemning the US and Israeli attack on Iran and lamented the deaths of more than 100 children.

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) asserted that the bombing of the Minab Girls’ Primary School, which left approximately 150 dead, is a serious violation of humanitarian law.

UNESCO stated it was deeply alarmed by the incident and reiterated that schools must be respected.

“Attacks on educational institutions endanger students and teachers and undermine access to education,” it stated.

For its part, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned that the aggression by Washington and Tel Aviv raises tensions in the region and endangers millions of children.

We echo Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and de-escalation. We urge compliance with international and humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians and essential services upon which children depend for survival, he stated.

If hostilities do not cease and tensions are not reduced, there is a risk of a wider conflict with grave consequences for the civilian population and the stability of the region. I strongly urge all parties to return to the negotiating table immediately, he affirmed.
