Brazilian educator praises Fidel Castro’s work

Brasilia, Mar 13 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian educator and psychologist Pedro Carvalho Pontual highlighted in this capital the historical and pedagogical importance of the work of Fidel Castro (1926-2016), leader of the Cuban Revolution.

Before an audience comprised of representatives of social movements and left-wing parties, diplomats, intellectuals, and members of organizations in solidarity with Cuba, Carvalho underscored that the figure of the Commander-in-Chief must also be understood from his profound educational and humanistic perspective.

The legacy of Fidel Castro is that of a great educator of nations, affirmed the Brazilian educator, who stated last night during a celebration for his 100th birthday, that the Cuban Revolution transformed education into an instrument of social emancipation and the building of citizenship.

He recalled that one of the first major projects launched by the revolutionary process was the 1961 literacy campaign, considered one of the most important educational experiences of the 20th century in Latin America.

In his view, the Cuban leader’s thinking resonates deeply with the emancipatory pedagogy championed by renowned Brazilian educator Paulo Freire.

He insisted that Fidel’s thinking remains relevant in the current context, marked by profound social inequalities, environmental crises, and challenges to democracy.
