Congo: Constitutional Court ratifies president’s reelection

Brazzaville, Mar 29 (Prensa Latina) Congo's Constitutional Court ratified the reelection of Denis Sassou N'Guesso as president of the Republic and dismissed the appeal for annulment filed by one of the candidates, Les Echos du Congo Brazzaville informed.

The court met to rule on the request to overturn the results of the presidential elections held on March 12 and 15, 2026, filed by Les Souverainistes’s candidate and leader, Uphrem Dave Mafoula.

The provisional election results showed Sassou N’Guesso as the clear winner and were communicated to the court on March 20 by the president of the Independent National Electoral Commission. However, following an appeal challenging this information, the court reviewed the case.

The Constitutional Court determined that there was no direct and conclusive evidence of alleged irregularities in the voting and upheld Sassou N’Guesso’s victory, with 2,509,456 votes, representing 94.90 percent of the valid votes.

Some 3,155,751 Congolese citizens were registered to vote in the presidential election, 2,681,921 of whom cast their ballots, for a turnout of 84.99 percent.

An estimated 37,578 votes were invalid, and the candidate who received the most support after the re-elected president was Mabio Mavoungou Zinga, who ran for office for the first time at age 70, leading an alliance of several political parties. He reached 1.40 percent of the valid votes.

Uphrem Dave Mafoula received only 27,254 votes.
