Cuba promotes housing alternative with recycled containers

Holguin, Cuba, April 1st (Prensa Latina) The province of Holguin now promotes the construction of houses from cargo containers, a viable alternative to offer better living conditions to families affected by weather events.

According to the priorities of the program, access to these properties is mainly granted to families in vulnerable situations.

Among the beneffited groups are mothers with more than three children and people whose previous homes were affected by weather events, such as cyclones.

Industry experts point out that, while the housing deficit exceeds current capacity due to economic constraints and a lack of inputs, ingenuity and popular participation are essential.

The provincial director of Housing, Yuriel Zaldivar, confirmed that in the capital of Holguin is currently carried out the largest settlement of this type, which will have 31 buildings from a plan of several tens for the year.

Zaldivar explained that specialists from the Engineering and Design Services Company Vertice designed the spaces in structures of eleven meters long by two meters wide, to include two rooms, kitchen, dining room and living room.

Other entities take part of the project, such as the company 60 Aniversario de la Revolucion de Octubre (Sixty Anniversary of October Revolution) located in Holguin, which is responsible for opening spaces for doors and windows, while ensuring connections to the electricity and aqueduct networks.

This initiative joins the actions of the Cuban state to address the housing deficit through ingenuity and the participation of various local industries, prioritizing comfort and urbanization of new settlements.
