Under the slogan “Demarcate Lula: A sovereign Brazil is one with demarcated and protected indigenous land,” participants will walk from the Esplanade of Ministries to the Three Powers Square.
Organized by the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB), the demonstration seeks to pressure the government to move forward with pending territorial recognition and denounce the increased violence in their communities.
The organization announced that about 76 indigenous lands are ready for official recognition as of March, and depend solely on the signature of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, while 34 others are awaiting a Justice Ministry order to continue their processing.
APIB Executive Coordinator Kleber Karipuna affirmed that suspending these processes reflects a lack of political priority.
This Thursday’s events include a tribute to indigenous leaders murdered in land conflicts in states such as Bahia and Maranhao, in a context that, according to the movement, demonstrates the persistence of violence against these communities and the absence of effective responses from the State.
