The Basque union LAB (Nationalist Workers’ Committees) received a private donation of 150,000 euros, earmarked for the Cuban healthcare system, it was announced this Tuesday.
The LAB has been conducting a fundraising campaign to collect medical supplies for the island, in partnership with the Euskadi-Cuba, Sierra Maestra, and Desembarco del Granma associations, comprised of Cuban residents in Spain.
After raising over 17,000 euros, an estimated 167,311 euros have been allocated to the purchase of 154 dual-chamber pacemakers for patients on the island, through Medicuba-Europa, a network of associations and non-governmental organizations in 13 European countries.
The campaign’s proponents stated that the initiative, launched on September 1, arose as a direct response “to the criminal economic blockade imposed by the United States, tightened in the last few years with 243 additional coercive measures and Cuba’s infamous inclusion in Washington’s State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT) list.”
