Chilean orgs denounce attempt to pardon human rights violators

Santiago, Chile, Apr 24 (Prensa Latina) Labor and human rights organizations in Chile denounced a move to pardon those responsible for crimes against humanity committed during the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship (1973-1990).

These are individuals who, under the pretext of their advanced age or health conditions, are seeking to evade serving their sentences, Chile’s Association of Relatives of Executed Politicians (AFEP) stated.

Among the possible beneficiaries is Cesar Manriquez Bravo, an agent of the National Intelligence Directorate, Pinochet’s secret police, convicted of several crimes during the so-called Colombo Operation.

Hector Osses, a Chilean Police officer responsible for murders in San Gregorio neighborhood, and Jorge Mandiola, an agent of the National Information Center who participated in Alfa Carbon Operation, are also involved.

Reports noted that Constanza Garrido, head of the Human Rights Program attached to the Justice Ministry, instructed the lawyers representing the plaintiffs in the three cases not to appeal the favorable court decisions, citing mental health or medical reasons.
