Threats of school shootings cause concern in Uruguay

Montevideo, Apr 25 (Prensa Latina) Threats of school shootings in Uruguay raised alarms this week, prompting concern from education authorities and prompting police action.

Despite the assumption that it is a “tasteless joke,” the National Public Education Administration (ANEP) has mandated that a police report be filed, as well as a report to the Cybercrimes Unit, if the threat is made through digital media.

The threats of shootings at high schools and technical schools were written on walls and also disseminated on social media, generally on TikTok.

The president of ANEP, Pablo Caggiani, said that the threats “cannot be minimized.” The Ministry of the Interior is treating the reports as if they were real.

Caggiani stated that, even though the threats haven’t materialized and stem from a digital challenge that originated in Argentina, they are following the issue with concern, as other countries around the world are experiencing attacks with firearms in educational institutions.

Police action led to the identification of some of the perpetrators, who stated that their intention was to force the suspension of classes.

The identified teenagers were referred to the Prosecutor’s Office, and in some cases, they have already been sentenced.
