Iran denounces illegal US actions against maritime navigation

Tehran, May 3 (Prensa Latina) Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei stated that recent declarations by US President Donald Trump are an explicit admission of the illegal nature of Washington's actions against international maritime navigation.

The Iranian spokesman noted that the US president’s comparison between his country’s naval forces and “pirates” shows the criminal nature of the operations to seize Iranian vessels.

Baghhaei stressed that such statements cannot be interpreted as a slip of the tongue, but rather as a conscious declaration confirming practices contrary to international law.

He also urged the international community, UN member states, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to express their unequivocal rejection of what he described as attempts to normalize flagrant violations of international law.

The Iranian spokesman’s remarks came after Trump claimed that US forces had recently seized a ship and its cargo, describing the actions as “a very lucrative business” and comparing them to piracy.

The context for these tensions includes the conflict that began on February 28 between the United States and Israel against Iran, which left more than 3,000 dead, followed by a ceasefire announced on April 8.

Afterward, Tehran reopened the Strait of Hormuz, but later decided to close it again after the US imposed a naval blockade on its ports on April 13.
