Uruguayans sign against US military intervention threat against Cuba

Montevideo, May 13 (Prensa Latina) Signatures denouncing the United States' threats of war against Cuba and Mexico are being collected in Uruguay in response to a public document promoted by engineer and academic Gregory Randall.

The United States government is carrying out highly aggressive and destructive actions in our continent, the document states.

It mentions the attack on Venezuela and the kidnapping of president Nicolas Maduro. It also cites interference in electoral processes in Honduras and Argentina.

It adds the “extrajudicial killing of nearly 200 people in the waters of the Caribbean and the Pacific.” This represents the destruction of the post-war international order and its replacement with the law of the strongest, it argues.

The text points out that the saga of US interventionism, which for 180 years has involved terrorist attacks, bombings, invasions, and wars of aggression against Mexico, Panama, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Cuba, is a recurring theme.

It also notes the promotion of coups and support for dictatorships in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and other countries to satisfy Washington’s political and economic interests.

Today, two sister nations—Cuba and Mexico—face an imminent threat of military intervention, the text warns. It emphasizes that the “use of force as a method for resolving conflicts between states constitutes a serious violation of fundamental principles” of international law and not only threatens the sovereignty of these two countries, the well-being, health, and lives of their people, but also peace throughout Latin America. Therefore, it calls for endorsement of the statement in favor of peace, the self-determination of peoples, respect for international law, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
