Praised by audiences and critics alike, actress Monse Duany transforms herself to portray the unforgettable Juana Bacallao (1925-2024) in this new production by the Nave Oficio de Isla theater company.
“With this performance, we pay tribute to her great figure by dramatizing the truth superimposed on the parade of anecdotes, characters, and outlandish situations that filled her life.” After its premiere at El Mejunje in Santa Clara, the play returns to Havana with performances this weekend at the Bertolt Brecht Theater and at the Nave Oficio venue on Isla Street in Old Havana, on May 20 and 21.
Then, on May 23 and 24, it will be shown at the National Museum of Fine Arts, culminating its run at the Martí Theater on Tuesday, May 26.
Neris Amelia Salazar debuted with the song “Yo soy Juana Bacallao” at the Marti Theater in the late 1940s.
Recognized with the National Humor Award in 2020, her talent transcended borders, and she shared the stage with important figures in Cuban art such as Benny More, Celeste Mendoza, and Rita Montaner.
The artist, beloved and admired by her fellow Cubans, graced Havana nights in several of the country’s most prestigious nightclubs, including Tropicana, Sans-Souci, and El Parisien.
