Chinese media expose US hostility against Cuba

Beijing, May 21 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban government's denunciation of the US Department of Justice's indictment of historic leader Raul Castro received extensive repercussion in Chinese media on Thursday.

Xinhua, China Daily, the People’s Daily (the official newspaper of the Communist Party of China), CGTN, The Paper, among others, published several articles analyzing Washington’s escalation of pressure against the island, the impact of the sanctions, the blockade imposed by the United States on the Cuban population, and the filing of charges against the revolutionary leader.

They also published the Cuban government’s response and interviewed experts, most of whom analyzed these events in relation to the Monroe Doctrine and attributed them to electoral interests, given the proximity of the midterm elections in the United States.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry also expressed its firm opposition to the external pressures and threats of force exerted against Cuba, in light of Washington’s accusations against Raul Castro.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated, in response to a question from Prensa Latina, that sanctions and coercive measures without a basis in international law or authorization from the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) lack legitimacy.

Guo affirmed that Beijing opposes the abuse of judicial procedures used as a tool of political pressure against other countries.

China also rejected any attempt to increase pressure on Cuba under different pretexts.
