Israeli forces report new incursion into southern Syria

Damascus, May 21 (Prensa Latina) An Israeli army force carried out a new incursion into the Syrian province of Deraa, in the south of the country, in yet another violation of Syrian sovereignty.

The state news agency SANA reported that an Israeli military contingent entered the Wadi al-Raqad area, near the town of Jamla, in western Deraa, using several military vehicles from an Israeli base located in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.

According to the agency, Israeli forces conducted patrol operations and military movements in the valley amid an atmosphere of tension and caution among local residents.

SANA also reported that the Israeli army shelled areas near Tell al-Ahmar al-Sharqi, in the southern rural area of Quneitra, with several artillery shells.

Israel continues to conduct recurring incursions and bombings in southern Syria, including the establishment of checkpoints, searches of civilians, raids on homes, and arrests, including of minors and shepherds, according to local reports.

Israel has occupied most of the Syrian Golan Heights since the 1967 war and expanded its military presence into additional areas following the events in Syria in late 2014.

On December 8 of that year, Israel declared the suspension of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and advanced into the buffer zone, while Damascus reiterated its commitment to the international agreement.

Syrian authorities have repeatedly denounced the Israeli attacks and incursions as violations of international law and national sovereignty.
