In his profile on the social network X, the president stated that the period beginning on May 20 of that year has a meaning of “intervention, interference, dispossession, and frustration” for this Caribbean nation.

He noted that, nevertheless, it is important to be grateful for that day having instilled in Cubans of that time an anti-imperialist sentiment that each subsequent generation has felt deepen with new and constant threats to the independence and sovereignty of the homeland.

In his message, he expressed that proof of this is that today “the paid agents of dishonor are clamoring for the return of the tutelary republic.”

Let’s not underestimate them, but never forget that, thanks to the empire itself, we anti-imperialists are far more numerous, he pointed out.

On May 20, 1902, the Republic of Cuba was officially declared, following the United States’ intervention in the Spanish-Cuban War of Independence; however, this nation remained subject to the neocolonial tutelage of that northern power for almost sixty years.
