Chilean protesters reject pardon for human rights violators

Santiago, Chile, Jun 7 (Prensa Latina) Members of social and political organizations, relatives of victims of the dictatorship, and students marched in the Chilean capital to protest the government's intention to pardon human rights violators.

“No more impunity” was the slogan of the peaceful demonstration, which “Despite being blocked from reaching La Moneda Palace, we are here with dignity and strength to reject denialism and protest against this government that wants to withdraw the National Search Plan for the Disappeared,” declared Alicia Lira.

In statements to Prensa Latina, the president of the Association of Relatives of the Politically Executed recalled that almost 53 years after the coup against the government of Salvador Allende, 1,092 people remain missing and 377 were murdered without their bodies being returned.

Senator Fabiola Campillai, who also led the march, condemned Justice Minister Fernando Rabat’s attempt to pardon, due to their advanced age, those who committed crimes against humanity, murdered children, and drug traffickers who have caused so much harm in this country.

The Embroiderers of Memory also participated in the demonstration, and students from universities and other institutions joined the mobilization.

Members of the Anexa Chile Human Rights Observatory monitored the march after the Carabineros police repressed a student demonstration this week against budget cuts, leaving several injured and arrested.
