The significant increase is evident mainly in products such as eggs, as well as chicken and pork, but their unequal distribution persists, the analysis, released by the press office of the international organization, points out.
The report, titled “Determinants of supply and demand for terrestrial animal food: An overview of the evidence and policies on the state of knowledge and existing gaps,” points out that livestock farming has thus become one of the fastest-growing components of the agricultural sector.
The new FAO study offers a comprehensive and science-based global assessment of the livestock sector’s contribution to food security, sustainable agri-food systems, nutrition, and healthy diets.
It highlights that, over the six decades evaluated, poultry meat experienced the most pronounced growth, increasing fivefold, followed by eggs and pork, whose production nearly doubled, while beef remained stable or declined in many regions.
In 2022, global TASF production reached 361 million tons of meat, compared to approximately 71 million tons in 1961, as well as 930 million tons of milk, a figure significantly higher than the approximately 342 million tons produced 61 years earlier.
Also noteworthy was the increase in egg production that year, reaching 94 million tons, 79 million tons higher than that recorded in 1961, the source adds.
