Ecuador: Unions to protest Government policies

Quito, Jun 12 (Prensa Latina) Ecuadorian trade unions announced protesta against the economic and labor policies of the administration of President Daniel Noboa, which they accuse of boosting layoffs, downsizing the state apparatus, and increasing the cost of living.

The rallies were convened by the United Workers’ Front (FUT) and the National Union of Educators (UNE), which announced demonstrations for June 12-13 in several cities across the country.

Leaders of those organizations questioned the reduction in the number of ministries, the reforms to the Organic Code of Territorial Organization, Autonomy, and Decentralization (COOTAD), and the increase in fuel prices.

Jose Villavicencio, president of the General Union of Ecuadorian Workers (UGTE), stated that the measures implemented by the Executive are part of a process of reducing public sector employment.

Villavicencio affirmed that the Public Integrity Law led to the departure of thousands of state employees, and the reforms to the COOTAD, approved by the National Assembly (Parliament) with its ruling majority, have already resulted in layoffs in local governments.

The UGTE leader warned that the recent government decision to merge ministries could lead to the departure of around 20,000 public employees.
