Selassie, quoted by the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation, noted that fostering a democratic culture and strengthening independent institutions have been the main priorities in the state-building process in recent years.

“Dialogue, consultation, and adherence to the rule of law are characteristics of civilized politics,” he declared, while emphasizing that Ethiopia’s transition to a politics of ideas is gaining momentum.

He considered the success of the general elections held on June 1, encompassing preparation, the voting process, and post-election procedures, to serve as an example of the nation’s organization and vision for a civilized political landscape.

In explaining why millions of people cast their votes, the president stated that, beyond their love for the country and their desire for peace, the people acted to affirm their role as masters of their own destiny and that power derives solely from public consent.

The people actively participated to move beyond the path of violence and destruction, to foster hope within a civilized political context, and to lay a reliable foundation for the next generation, he asserted.

He concluded by emphasizing that, by strengthening these democratic practices and building solid institutions, a sustainable guarantee for the future and prosperity of Ethiopians must be fostered.

Selassie’s remarks came during a recognition ceremony organized by the Council of Civil Society Organizations of Ethiopia for the Seventh General Elections.
