Basic food basket in El Salvador at a 25-year high

San Salvador, Jun 18 (Prensa Latina) The urban basic food basket (CBA) in El Salvador is currently at a 25-year high, reaching approximately $253.71 between January and April, according to data from the National Office of Statistics and Censuses (ONEC).

According to ONEC, the figures recorded in the first four months of 2026 show an increase of $3.59 compared to the annual average of $250.12 reported at the end of 2025.

The agency specifies that the current CBA figure is only surpassed by the figures recorded between June and July of 2024, when it reached $260, a situation that prompted the government to create farmers’ markets nationwide with the aim of lowering food prices.

Data from the National Statistics Office (ONEC) shows that the annual average of the urban basic food basket (CBA) remained below $200 between 2001 and 2014, until it surpassed that threshold in 2015.

It then fell slightly between 2016 and 2018, before rising again above $200 in 2019. Since then, the indicator has not remained at that level; on the contrary, it has begun to register successive increases.

As for the rural basket, the publication specifies that between January and April it stood at $184.59, a figure that also represents the second highest annual average in the last 25 years.
