Group of 77 and China demand immediate end of blockade on Cuba

United Nations, Jul 7 (Prensa Latina) The Group of 77 and China have called for the immediate cessation of the blockade against Cuba and all restrictive measures imposed on the island by the United States.

The call was made during a debate initiated by Cuba at the United Nations General Assembly regarding the end of this intensified policy of hostility by the U.S. government.

The delegation from Uruguay, currently chairing the G-77 plus China, stated that the group views the damage caused by Washington’s blockade as “enormous.”

It affects all critical sectors of the Cuban economy—including health, nutrition, and agriculture, as well as trade, investment, tourism, and the banking sector—the representative affirmed.

They stated that the implementation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act “is a clear violation of the freedom of trade among nations, given its aim to intimidate by penalizing any commercial or investment transaction (between any other country and Cuba).”

They added that the blockade on oil supplies and the measures imposed on third states engaging in legitimate trade relations with Havana have clear extraterritorial effects.

The Group emphasizes that these measures contravene the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law, and undermine multilateralism, international economic cooperation, and a rules-based, open, non-discriminatory, and fair system with the World Trade Organization at its core.
