Dominican politician highlights global opposition to Cuban blockade

Santo Domingo, Jul 9 (Prensa Latina) The Dominican politician and communicator Luis Fernandez published today in Vanguardia del Pueblo the article "La ONU y 34 años de rechazo al bloqueo contra Cuba", about international opposition to this coercive measure of the United States.

In the text, Fernandez points out that the United Nations General Assembly, with the support of 136 countries, held a debate this week on the blockade imposed by Washington on the island, which, he noted, reaffirms the interest of most nations in maintaining this issue as an international priority.

The author recalled that since 1992, this Assembly has successively adopted resolutions calling for an end to the blockade, a policy that affects the economic and social development of this Caribbean country and limits access to essential goods, medicines, technologies, financing and international markets, he added.

Fernandez highlighted in Vanguardia del Pueblo, organ of the Dominican Liberation Party (DLP), the interventions of representatives from Mexico and Venezuela during the debate, who rejected unilateral coercive measures and expressed their opposition to the blockade.

Also, he took the statements of the Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodriguez, who reported that the damages caused by this policy between March 2025 and February 2026 amount to eight billion 103 million dollars at current prices, while the cumulative impact reaches $178.7 billion.

The Dominican speaker also noted that countries from Africa, Latin America, Asia, Europe and the Middle East supported Cuba at the special session on July 7, with nine votes against – including the United States and Israel – and 30 abstentions.

In his article, Fernandez argues that although the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly are not legally binding, they reflect the predominant position of the international community and has political and diplomatic weight.
