Cuba’s Electricity Network restored after outage

Havana, Jul 15 (Prensa Latina) Cuba's Electric Union (UNE) reported that the National Electric System (SEN) was restored, following a total collapse caused by the shutdown of Unit 1 at the Felton thermoelectric plant.

Earlier on Wednesday, it was announced that the SEN had been reconnected across the island, stretching from the western province of Pinar del Rio to Holguin in the east.

The UNE statement specified that the Mariel and Felton thermoelectric plants had been synchronized with the SEN, and that Units 3 and 4 of the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes plant, as well as Felton Unit 1, were already in the startup process.

The utility further reported that restoration was carried out gradually, as conditions within the SEN allowed.

This outage—the third in the last eight days—occurs amidst growing economic pressure and United States sanctions against Cuba.

Washington is blocking oil shipments to the island following an executive order signed by President Donald Trump last January, which threatens tariffs against countries that export fuel or facilitate its supply.

Since late 2024, the SEN has suffered several total shutdowns, compounded by the massive impact of the nearly seven-decade-long blockade Washington maintains against the Caribbean nation, which prevents access to the resources needed to maintain and develop the energy sector.
