China reaffirms commitment to nuclear self-defense strategy

Beijing, Jul 30 (Prensa Latina) China reaffirmed its commitment to its nuclear self-defense strategy and emphasized that it maintains its nuclear forces at the minimum level necessary for national security, marking 30 years since the suspension of its nuclear tests.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning noted at a press conference that July 29 marked three decades since the Chinese government announced the suspension of nuclear tests.

The spokesperson pointed out that this decision responded to the demands of numerous non-nuclear-weapon states and made a historic contribution to the conclusion of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), in addition to advancing the international process of nuclear weapons control.

Mao stated that, for the past 30 years, China has fulfilled its commitment not to conduct nuclear tests and has actively supported international efforts to prohibit such tests.

She pointed out that the country was one of the first signatories of the CTBT, supports its prompt entry into force, backs the capacity building of developing countries, and continues domestic preparations to fulfill its obligations under the treaty.

The spokesperson emphasized that China’s nuclear policy maintains high stability, continuity, and predictability, while promoting the total prohibition and complete destruction of nuclear weapons.

She also reiterated that Beijing maintains the policy of not being the first to use nuclear weapons and its unconditional commitment not to use them or threaten their use against states without such weapons or nuclear-weapon-free zones.
