Iran claims control over navigation in the Strait of Hormuz

Tehran, Jul 30 (Prensa Latina) – The Iranian Army's Deputy Coordinator, Habibollah Sayyari, stated that no movement would take place in the Strait of Hormuz without Tehran's authorization.

During a press conference cited by Iranian state television, Sayyari asserted that his country’s Navy maintains “total control” over the eastern part of the strait, the northern Indian Ocean, and the Gulf of Oman.

Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18 and began negotiations to reach a definitive agreement.

However, disagreements subsequently arose regarding freedom of navigation and security in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic route for energy supplies and global trade.

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched attacks against Iran that, according to Iranian authorities, resulted in more than 3,000 deaths.

Tehran responded with operations in which US and Israeli citizens were killed.
