Africa examines rising food insecurity despite investments

Addis Ababa, Aug 18 (Prensa Latina) The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) called for a critical analysis of why food insecurity is increasing despite sustained investments and political commitments made at the Malabo Declaration, during an event that concludes in this capital.

Sylvia Henga, director of IGAD’s Agriculture and Environment Division, made the remark while addressing the 5th Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Program (CAADP) Biennial Review Report, which is being held in Ethiopia.

Henga revealed that the Horn of Africa region remains below the needed course to meet the Malabo commitments, despite progress made in several thematic areas.

The Malabo Declaration was adopted in June 2014 during the African Union (AU) Summit held in Equatorial Guinea. It is a political commitment by African leaders to transform agriculture, eradicate hunger, and reduce poverty by 2025.

Figures presented by the IGAD representative state that in 2024, more than 63 million people suffered from food insecurity, while more than eight million children suffered from malnutrition.

The dialogue examines regional and national performance within the framework of the 5th CAADP Biennial Review mechanism, identifies achievements and persistent challenges, assesses trends in several thematic areas, and will formulate recommendations to strengthen the implementation of the Kampala Declaration.
