Lula maintains lead in Brazilian presidential race

Brasilia, Aug 17 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva leads voter preference for the upcoming October elections with 41 percent, compared to 36 percent for Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, according to a poll.

This result comes from the tenth edition of the BTG/Nexus survey, conducted from August 14 to 16, and confirms the president’s lead in the first round of the general elections.

The survey, commissioned by the bank BTG Pactual, shows a slight recovery for Lula compared to the previous measurement on August 10, when he registered 40 percent.

Flavio Bolsonaro, meanwhile, moved from 35 percent to the new figure, though he remains five percentage points behind the head of state.

In the projected scenario—which presents respondents with a list of candidates—former Goiás Governor Ronaldo Caiado appears with five percent, while Free Brazil Movement founder Renan Santos and former Minas Gerais Governor Romeu Zema each garner four percent.

Undecided voters or those who did not respond account for two percent; in the spontaneous category (without a list of names), Lula obtains 38 percent and Flavio Bolsonaro secures 29 percent.

Furthermore, the gap narrows in a potential runoff between the two main contenders, as Lula would receive 47 percent of the vote compared to 44 percent for the legislator.

The result remained unchanged from the previous week’s poll and, considering the two-percentage-point margin of error, indicates a statistical tie, according to the study cited by media outlets such as the *Brasil 247* portal.

Among Lula’s supporters, conviction regarding their choice stands at 86 percent, while it reaches 82 percent among Flavio Bolsonaro’s supporters.
