Cuba to share knowledge on common challenges of small States

Suva, Aug 28 (Prensa Latina) Cuba will participate as a dialogue partner in the 55th meeting of leaders of the Pacific Islands Forum to share its experiences in addressing common challenges faced by small island States, diplomatic sources announced on Friday.

The report, to which Prensa Latina had access, stated that the meeting will take place from August 30 to September 4 in Palau, and Havana will be represented by its Ambassador to Fiji, concurrently accredited to the Pacific Islands, Nestor Torres.

Torres will hold bilateral meetings with the leaders of the region’s States during the meeting, which is the leading forum for dialogue and political exchange in the Pacific region, bringing together 14 small island States, as well as observers and dialogue partners, a status Cuba has held since 2013.

Participants will focus this year on the theme “B.E.L.A.U. Building Economies: Life. Action. Unity” and will prioritize adopting coordinated regional approaches to development financing, investment mobilization, and economic cooperation.

It is also expected to insist on strengthening the collective defense of Pacific priorities, including climate action, sustainable development, and economic resilience, to ensure they remain visible on an increasingly crowded and contentious international agenda.

The statement deeply assesses the friendship, solidarity, and cooperation built with Pacific nations, despite the geographical distance and the limited financial resources available to small island states.
