Cuba: Adolescent fertility declines, requires comprehensive attention

Havana, September 16 (Prensa Latina) – The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is observing Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Week this week—a regional initiative for Latin America and the Caribbean aimed at raising awareness about this issue and its consequences.

Cuba is one of the countries in the region where this phenomenon—despite a slight decline in recent years—still requires urgent, comprehensive attention, according to specialists and authorities.

Among girls aged 15 to 19, the adolescent fertility rate fell from 48.5 births per thousand in 2021 to 43.2 in 2025, as confirmed by data series updated in August 2026 by the Cuban Observatory on Gender Equality (OCIG).

In 2025, the contribution of adolescents to the country’s total fertility also dropped by one percentage point—falling to 17.3 percent from 18.3 percent in 2024—reflecting a rise in the contribution from other age groups, primarily women aged 20 to 24.

However, no significant declines have been achieved regarding the 10-to-14 age group; over the last five-year period, rates for this group have hovered between 1.3 and 1.4 per thousand girls, according to OCIG figures.

The data also reveal provincial disparities, with the highest incidence occurring in the eastern region. Among the 15-to-19 age group, the provinces of Granma, Holguin, and Guantanamo record the highest rates, all exceeding 50 births per thousand adolescents.

Meanwhile, in the 10-to-14 age group, Mayabeque records the highest rate (2.2), followed by Guantanamo (2.0), and Granma and Holguin (both at 1.9).
