Lula advocates for expanding robotic surgery in Brazil

Brasilia, Sep 28 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva advocated for expanding the use of robotic surgery within the Unified Health System (SUS) after witnessing a pioneering procedure in the Amazon region in the city of Belem.

During his visit to the hospital complex of the *Benemerita Sociedade Portuguesa Beneficente do Para*, the president noted that the first robotic prostate surgery in the Amazon region was being performed and expressed his intention to extend the technology to other highly complex procedures.

In the president’s view, the experience initiated with prostate surgeries should not be limited to that specialty alone.

He also championed other initiatives, such as the *Farmacia Popular* (Popular Pharmacy) and *Brasil Sorridente* (Smiling Brazil) programs, the expansion of radiotherapy equipment, and strategies to reduce waiting lists for consultations, medical tests, and specialized surgeries.

According to the Ministry of Health, *Farmacia Popular* currently offers 41 products free of charge and served over 24.5 million people in 2026.

The president mentioned the acquisition of 3,300 vehicles to transport patients who need to travel to other municipalities for consultations and treatments.

He emphasized that the technological advances incorporated into the public health system allow for expanded access to complex treatments, regardless of the patients’ financial means.
